I thought it evoked the early 70's folk rock era very well (I couldn't help but play my copy of Jethro Tull's 'Songs from the Wood' several times while I was reading it) and the story itself, with the interweaving of a magical summer retreat melded with a slowly encroaching supernatural element, was well done overall, but I think I was just expecting a bit more given the relatively gushing praise here on GR. The reader must decide, not so much "whose story is true," but which vantage point provides the most coherent narrative. This was one hell of a striking horror story. That was the live spark he’d been carrying, the bright ember he kept in his pocket to start a fire whenever he stopped. All stems from that. Eventually she converted to Christianity so she could marry him.”. The old grey man, rather than the green one? It was recommended by NPR. A slow start as you get to know the various characters in the novel. After that the book gradually almost takes on a dream like quality as the musical group sets up there studio in the medical hall.It is not a traditional ghost story by any means but has some eerie moments sprinkled throughout. The star of the story is the house itself, almost a living entity allowing the visitors to stay on its terms, the author captures the atmosphere of age and ancient times perfectly.I absolutely loved the ending,my only regret was not being able to visit this old house again .
